My 15 year old was given a book to read by his English teacher which included the following:
Pedophilia, rape, incest, abortion, alcohol, LSD, marijuana, gay sex with a minor who is crying, minors meeting up with grown men for sex in a park “on the ground and against trees”, almost "f-ing" a dog, disturbing self gratification acts including one being hospitalized, suicide, suicidal ideation, and molestation. The f word was used several times as well as other obscenities throughout the book which are derogatory toward both sexes. The main characters were drunk, high or drugged most of the book with details of how good it made them feel and specifics of what everything felt like. Every abused person in this book stayed with their abusers as if this was normal.
It was a horrific read, but I forced myself to read and take notes to protect my child and other children in our district.
I read every single derogatory quote and passage (5 pages typed) to the administrator and teacher. I do believe they heard me and respected my valid concerns. However, when I sent a follow-up to the entire school board , the superintendent, the principal, and the teacher, I received ZERO response.
And this is EXACTLY why WE Must get rid of these board members who do NOT care about your children. Please pray for our youth to be protected from these types of acts which could be considered grooming, indoctrination and/or desensitization to things that would cause most to take pause. This book was disturbing and attempted to normalize what should never be considered normal. I am not in favor of banning books, however, I am in favor of age appropriate content being disseminated to my children via the schools and the libraries. Just like an R-rated movie, these materials should require ID and verification of being an adult.
As an aside, every tenth grade student (14 and 15 year olds) was given 4 books to choose from. All 4 have been banned at one time or another for various reasons including profanity, racism, sexually explicit content. And, apparently, the worst book, which I highlighted above, has been in use for 10th grade English in Hartland High School for 10 years. Sadly, it is painfully apparent we, as parents, must diligently review everything given to our children from our schools.
